What are the various controllable parameters? Standard Procedure to produce the Al-Li alloys for industrial application. Kindly suggest me some references related to the processing of AL-Li alloy.
The standard method to produce Al-Li alloys is by melting, under vacuum and in innert atmosphere, a master alloy of Al-Li with the other alloying elements or with some other master alloys containing Zr and Sc as grain refiners.
However, the difficult point is to produce a good binary Al-Li master alloy. Lithium (even of high purity) contains a non negligeable amount of ppm of other alkaline metals like K and Na. Thess elements segregate at the grain boundaries of the final alloy, producing brittleness. This phenomenon was largely studied in the 80th, and the best method to solve it was a precise and well controlled electrolytic method. You can give a look to the papers I published on Al-Li alloys between 1995 and 2000. There you will find references about this matter.
However, I anticipate you that this electrolytic method was developed at industrial scale only by some international companies, and it seems that is dificult to implement in a laboratory. I think that the best solution is to buy the master binary Al-Li alloy.
Perhaps the new technologies, using Li for batteries, have developed new methods to obtain very high purity Li, which not exhibit the above commented problem, but I suppose that in this case it should be very expensive and dificult to manipulate without contaminating it.
