If there is no continuity in your current position from one work day to the next, focus on the concept. I recommend writing your own response prior to reading the posts of other participants of this thread.
It is daily time-management dear @Daryn! Hard job! It happens when I do have my morning coffee, while looking into plans, to-do notes and what I have not finished day before. Of course, for me is really hard to wake up in the early morning.

The most difficult task in the course of my work day is to maintain a high level of concentrate on activities performed from dawn to dusk. Especially evening activities give me great difficulties in this regard. I know these my own limitations and that is why I plan professional tasks that require creativity before noon and just after having lunch.
Hi All, quite interesting replies. For me, the most difficult daily task is how to keep my students motivated to learn my subject and to not to get them bored of my lessons!
I have to examine students even during the teaching period of the term. Practically, I have 3 examination days a week. This is an unpleasant activity because of the ignorance of some (too many) students. As a consequence of legal raisons, my examinations are written ones and unfortunately some students present almost unreadable answers. Thus, examinations often are nightmares.
The most difficult task in the course of a work day is making your boss realize the obvious mistake he is doing on account of either his inexperience or being out of touch with issues he/she is dealing with.
People those who work closely with their immediate boss/manager/dean/director etc. will immediately realize that sometimes or even on daily basis your boss comes up with an idea which is not likely to get the desired result. You immediately have a task in hand to make him realize and on many occasions you let him learn by mistake. Because by correcting your boss on many occasions normally you are labeled as a trouble maker and seldom seen as a savior.
It is difficult to give a meaningful answer to this question. Because each work has its own difficulties. Work can also be easy today, however may be difficult tomorrow and vice versa.
The most difficult task in my work, on any day, is to convince people. In any work situation involving others (from bosses to subordinates), in the senior position that I occupy, either I convince them or they convince me. And, then we act together.
There is only one way an organization can achieve its goals - when concerned members act as one team towards a particular target/goal, what so ever the goal may be. Sometimes, the method prescribed by the boss is against the laid down procedures or ethos or even the personal liking of the subordinates. Sometimes, the way a subordinate does (or does not do) his tasks is revolving/unacceptable to the superiors. Either way therefore, people need talking to and be convinced.
In my three decades of work, I have come to realize that people matter the most and when they are convinced of your logic or you are convinced of theirs, and both act together, you can actually move mountains. Mundane tasks are a breeze.
There are a number of factors that influence the ability of anyone to convince someone else. Since this space is hardly sufficient to talk about all of them, I would stress upon the single most important factor in this business of "convincing": Your own conviction that it is 'possible'. If you believe, then you can convince others.
Very good question, Daryn. Hope you will share the "findings" after you collect a reasonable amount of feed back. Good luck.
Working together with despotic and ignorant bosses can be the subject of another thread. Unfortunately, this is a frequent situation mainly in countries with democracy deficit but can be found everywhere.
Dear @Irina, I have the same problem as you have described. Sometimes, people get angry if they do not get my response! I do not want any interruptions in a middle of an important work. Is it selfish?
I struggle with writing and too much activity going on around me. In undergrad, I lived on campus and so during that time I learned to read with all sorts of stimuli happening in the background. But, somehow, the never translated into the ability to write with noise. Otherwise, I agree with Roland, concentration and the ability to focus on something for a significant duration is a gift.
The single most difficult task you do in the course of your work day? For me @Daryn is how to begin it and how to end it. It is hard to go to the work place for the purpose to be only present, waiting for its end!! a work place with no objective working plan and no scheduling is a human destructive place
In my institution every task is a difficult task as employees have to work under an illiterate businessman as Chancellor and his inexperienced younger son a Vice-Chancellor, who are doing every thing against the code book.
On a lighter vein, Cecilia, you are lucky. You do not have to drive anywhere in India, particularly its big cities. They say driving in USA is right side, but driving in India is suicide!!!
The single most difficult task I have to do in the workplace is deal with people, keeping them happy and ensuring they are satisfied with the product. If people leave with smiles on their faces, I know I have done something right.
Dear @Mario and @Roland, Knowing how to work with idiots is an article attached! "Is it difficult to get these idiot leaders to recognize that their actions are demeaning, demoralizing and counterproductive? Yes, but not impossible once you decide to do something about it. All that's needed is a list of useful antidotes to counteract the harmful effects a highly placed dysfunction leader can cause.
That damage is much worse than any damage caused by an idiot follower because the dysfunctional behavior of those with downward influence affects a much larger number of people..."
There is one word that can sum up my feelings stupidity. From adminastration to the repairs and most unnerving are unintellegent drivers. It is not a physical or the task of getting up its stupidity ftom the time I leave my house untril i get home
incompetency of team works, corruption and hypocrisy. But the more difficult one is to know for whom we work and give our brains.
I don't know if I could share a personal experience may be not able to be understood by scientific standards even by myself too. Few years ago 5 or 6 in parallel with a visit of my brother and his wife who visited for the first time my country, and who the two have no connection with scientific works or research careers. The day of their arrival i was called by the husband of a sister of me who asked me to follow him for a duty; themselves have no skills in science , no university degrees and my sister's work is with sport administration and her man with a self business as a taxi driver. My surprise was that i was directed by him to a police building where a person or official asked me, without any reason, to let or give him my professional documents. At the end of the meeting, my sister's husband asked in my presence, the policeman or official for a social home, as a salary or compensation for his service to him.. So believe it or not, it is hard and difficult to have a scientific job in a chaotic system !!! of course i haven't given him any document only a copy of the one addressed to the presidency and yet registered there and said to him to take contact with the presidency for the rest of documents he wants as i have packed my request with all official and scientific documents there, in the same time i asked why he needs my professional documents as it is easy to him to get them from my office and what is the relationship of my profession and a police building. No response, the man put the document in an wardrobe and nothing follows from this date. And i do not know if my sister's husband has obtained his social home or not yet!!
