In physical sense, the negative mode I stress intensity factor is incorrect. When the crack is within a compressive stress field, the negative mode I SIF often occurs. The negative mode II stress intensity factor is attributed to the direction of the tangential component (shear) of the applied load in the mixed mode conditions.
