Many times while dealing with ecological models, we come across the phenomena of chaos, and while making bifurcation diagrams with respect to a bifurcation parameter, sometimes system becomes chaotic then periodic again becomes chaotic and so on. My main queries are like:
1. What is ecological significance of chaos in a dynamical system.
2. What is ecological significance of this type of stability change in a dynamical system (chaos-periodic-chaos...)?
Dear Sajan,
regardless of the system it is always insightful to know what type of dynamics (if any) underlie the data. In particular concerning ecosystems, one might want to known if fluctuations in populations are just due to randomness (noise) -- such like a noisy limit cycle in a Lotka-Volterra type of dynamics -- or if there is indeed some nondeterministic cause for such fluctuations which might not be random. This would possibly point to another interaction of a different species not yet considered etc. So, in short, knowing the type of dynamics could help choose which hypotheses to test and how to test them. I add a reference as a matter of curiosity.
