The concept of stress is an elusive one. The degrees to which we suffer separates simple day to day complaining and, quite often, internal termoil.
There is a great analogy about stress and cortisol; the poisonous chemical our body releases when stressed.
When man was younger, this chemical enabled us to escape from predators, such as a tiger. We would run up the tree, body overflowing with cortisol (and thank goodness for this) and then, as the tiger gets bored and leaves, the chemical ceases to be released. Nowadays, this same chemical informs our driving habits, when a bus is late it calls - once this is understood it becomes easier to manage the feeling.
Now, to explain this to someone that suffers from high stress is difficult and everyone understands things differently. It is irresponsible as a society to assume that we can all simply follow the same discourse. Through visual arts (much like in the days of kings and queens using propaganda to elevate themselves to a god-like position; and admittedly how our media continues to behave) we can use this as a tool to explain the fundamentals of stress and stress management.
Colour coded scale of stress, illustrations, Rorschach imagery. Once understood we can also use (the more commonly understood) therapeutic qualities of creativity to maintain a healthy level of stress. I appreciate the boom in "colour for happiness" books I have found, but this can extend to sculpture etc. whichever works for the individual. The creation of visual art often includes destruction which, most would agree, is often the desire we find when under the most stress.
Even more simply, to look at visual imagery can help to relax. Much like sitting by the sea, or whichever view it is that soothes you.
Visual Art can be used as a therapeutic remedy for stress relieve. Colours can play a major role in relieving stress of a person. Different colours have different therapeutic effects of people. Cool colours can relax the mind of a person while hot colours can make a person very active or feel the sensation of heat.
Activities in art such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and so forth relieves stress and tensions. They are indeed important activities that takes our minds off the stress and strains of life. When I am sculpting, I enter the world of my subject (mostly scenes depicting African culture). Thus, my mind is already busily engaged in some fascinating philosophical and historical episodes of the ethnic society. No room for stress.
For me art, music, literature represents the more human and enduring facets of life. It fulfills where most things, being ephemeral, cannot. It is what makes us exceptional as a specie. Therefore, my answer is yes.
