Does anyone know what the biological function of hydroxypyruvate isomerase (Hyi) is in animal cells? I know that it catalyses the chemical reaction of hydroxypyruvate to 2-hydroxy-3-oxopropanoate, but what is the physiological function/role of this in animals? ie. What metabolic pathway(s) is it involved in and when might the cell require its expression?
