dear friend, HLA polymolrphism can have correlation strongly between autoimmune diseases such as MS, Aspondylit ankylosan, graves and etc.. but it doesnt mean that if everyone has a certain HLA, will be affected to certain disease. Some polymorphisms only increase or decrease  the risk of affection to autoimmune diseases .e.g  people who has HLAB27 has greater risk for Aspondylit ankylosan..

I agree with Dr. Corell. However, as MHC polymorphism is driven by both pathogen selection and sexual reproductive-mechanisms, it is very likely that MHC polymorphism can also influence fitness related phenotypic traits, thus your work will be very interesting!

I suggest that you read more about the function of the MHC. The genes in the MHC are mostly involved in immune responses thus the phenotypes you would expect to see are outcomes of disease exposure. If you asked about these outcomes you would find tons. I think you may be asking the wrong question.

William, the traditional view is that mhc works directly on disease resistance so to speak, which obviously is a direct effector of fitness. So there may be indirect links between mhc polymorphism and traits that display relative fitness eg colour. But this hasn't been demonstrated. More recently it was proposed that the mhc may be a "magic trait" and have direct consequences on fitness related phenotypic traits through pleiotropic linkage. Again this is unsubstantiated. Seeing as mhc is involved in mate choice, and so is involved in other processes directly other than pathogen resistance, a "magic" linkage does not seem totally implausible. 

There a a few nice papers by Wayne Potts at Utah that address this question explicitly.  They did some nice experiments using artificial mouse, but free living  populations in barns.  Have a look at those.  He has some reviews as well.

Thanks. The lizard paper was the only one I had come across, yet if memory serves it actually discussed very little about MHC/colour correlations. I'll have another read. cheers
