Dimensional personality models (also mood) were used in music emotion research by Jonna Vuoskoski et al. (http://users.ox.ac.uk/~musf0093/publications.html) - is someone extending this work to soundscapes? Soundscape research has used e.g. the Weinstein Noise Sensitivity index, however this describes a specific trait, and not an individual's personality as a whole. There are several models for assessing soundscape quality.
Interesting question. I worked in a semiconductor company making audio ICs for 3D audio. I discovered that national or ethnic origin had a huge impact on preferences. For example western European ethnicity Americans (born here) clearly preferred one specific algorithm. I being in that category also felt it was more precise an true to the objective (making one hear sounds behind them from two TV speakers in front of them.) On the other hand the Japanese had a completely opposite take. The preferred algorithm B. And the MOS was a near dichotomy. Seemed like a political party line vote, but there was no skin in the game to bias it. I chalked it up to the phonemes and sounds we recognize in our languages and possibly physiology of head shape and brain processing differences. The cultures are very different. The eastern context is much higher than the west, they are more self aware. So personality or emotion adds another possibility to the mix.
Hi Ernest, thanks for the comment about cultural differences. I live and work in Singapore ("Asia Lite") and have sometimes thought along the same lines! For example, the people I pass (e.g. while jogging) on a pedestrian walkway often seem to register my presence quite late, as compared to people in Sweden. Just a feeling I have that 'peripheral hearing' might be less preferred in Singapore? But I think that individual differences are more important than cultural/societal. For example, the ethnicity-related Big Five personality ("EANCO") differences reported by Gosling et al. (2003) were negligeable. Then again that was in a large sample of US college students ("white, hispanic, black, asian etc etc") some of whom presumably having grown up elsewhere.
I agree that this is an interesting subject. At humanistic laboratory at Lund university the sound environment center has conducted a series of experiments where we have made use of the division between extrovert and introverts which seems to show slightly different reactions to sound and noise. For ex while reading introverts showed in experiments to be more easily disturbed where as extroverts were not so easily disturbed but on the other hand showed less of actual learning in their cognitive performance. I think there are a lot of factors determining the differences between how we react to sound and noise. It would be interesting to try to map them somehow...
Interesting discussions: I have studied how hearing loss might contribute to subjective sound scopes, especially how HI persons describe their artificial hearing experiences. A challenge might be division to extrovert and introvert personalities also among HI persons. In Baderborn is arranged a seminar of audionarratology (use as search term). These studies might add some information of how people "hear" .
