What is the % recovery of IPA by normal distillation if I have a mixture of 50% IPA & 50% water?
since these components form azeotrope, please give temperature and pressure of feed stream and number of trays to run the simulation.
You need to use a simulation software like Aspen HYSYS or Aspen Plus to model a distillation column for this binary mixture. Depending on the operating conditions in the distillation column such as temperature and pressure and also depending in the distillation column design for example whether it is packed bed or perforated plate, the % recovery of IPA will thus vary. Another important factor that will affect the percent recovery is the number of theoretical stages in the distillation column. This another parameter that must be optimized to maximize the percent recovery of IPA.
Hence, you cannot solve this problem by hand but need a simulation software.

Feed is at 40 Degree C, pressure 2.0 Kg/cm2. I will be doing batch distillation. I have 3 KL jacketed reactor above which I have 13 M tall packed column having 10 m of packing in it. Top condenser has cooling water of 35 degree C and H.T area of 4.5m2.
Also please tell me theoretically how can I make sure whether the mixture is not forming an azeotrope. I do not have access to any of the simulation software.
you firstly said that the process is normal distillation column and i requested T ,P and flow rate. For batch distillation process, more data is needed and i assumed some of them like the process took 1 hr, the ration of distillation per feed is 0.5 and trays are 5 and.... I have performed a simple simulation and the results are previously attached for you. Moreover, thermodynamic analysis is carried out using UNIQUAC and unfortunately, the system forms an azeotrope at 98.3 C at 2 kg.cm2.
