I am planning to conduct an experiment to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) for some organic compounds that have low solubility in both organic solvents and water. I have observed that adding DMSO to PBS buffer or water improves solubility, so I would like to know how much DMSO can be used for this experiment. DMSO can have various effects on bacteria and this depends also a little bit on the bacteria you use. However I think a end concentration of 2,5 % for E. coli is considered as save. In this article the MIC of DMSO for E.coli was 10%:

However, depending on which strain you use I think it would be a good idea to determine the MIC for DMSO yourself. In addition you should include in every experiment a control with only DMSO in the exact DMSO-concentration (end concentration) you have in the solutions for the organic compounds you are testing.
