First of all, electrode touches to the metal to complete the circuit. But after getting spark we retract back the electrode and maintain the distance of 2-3 mm. Now my question is if for ionisation of air voltage required is 3000 V/mm and the voltage that we are supposed to apply is only 300 V maximum. Then how the arc is still sustained and electron transfer from electrode to metal workpieces.
