Cadmium uptake was done on three kinds of microalgae (diatom, green and blue green algae). Most of the cadmium is absorbed in the cell wall of Skeletonema, in Chlorella, Cd most are inside the cell while in Spirulina, Cd are found both in cell wall and inside the cell.
Briefly, cell wall can adsorb cadmium cations by bonding them through the hydroxilic groups protruding from the glycocalix, while the intracellular cadmium (and other metallic cations) can be internalized through the use of transmembrane proteic channels.
You do have some literature in plant biology about Cd "using" Ca or Cl channel to enter the cell. you do also have specific Cd channel to store the Cd in the vacuole (still in plant cell). And Cd and other heavy metal can be bond to phytochelatine and the complex heavy-metal-phytochelatine transfered in the vacuole through a specific mechanims.
