What is the physiological role of opioid-mediated disinhibition in the hippocampus?

It has been established with brain slice experiments that opioid increases the excitability of hippocampal pyramidal cells (PC). This disinhibition, reportedly, occurs via Mu opioid receptor-mediated decrease in release of GABA from the hippocampal interneurons.

It begs further questions such as ..What will be the physiological relevance and avenues of occurrence for such a disinhibition? What could be pathological/physiological stimul(i). I look forward to discussion and knowing your ideas/thoughts on this!
