There are rumours that SiO (Silicon Monoxide) shows strong optical absorption around 1550 nm wavelength. Additional rumours claim that a diffusion zone between Si and SiO2 layers containing SiO is responsible for higher than expected absorption in Si/SiO2 layer stacks. The absorption of both materials themselves (Si and SiO2) should be low (a few ppm/cm or sub ppm/cm, respectively). Does anyone have information about the thickness or ,preferably, absorption of such a putative diffusion zone?
