In my opinion, perhaps the most serious challenge confronting the semiconductor industry is the semiconductor and associated waste. It is serious on the following counts:
1. The semiconductor industry appears to ignore this ever-growing problem.
2. There is yet no effective and proven system/solution in place to tackle this menace.
3. The waste material (containing silicon, precious metals, etc.) when recycled can recover enormous resources.
4. The waste contains some very toxic materials.
The semiconductor industry has cold feet, because the only viable solution may be to completely reorient and reform the semiconductor technology and equipment design to make the products more friendly to recycling.
