For an all-encompassing test of deep appreciation and ability to use the scientific process you might use Piagetian Formal Operations tasks, like the famous Pendulum Task (link to downloadable simulator below). Just limit your participants to those who haven’t learned the specific facts (usually toward the end of 12th grade Physics). From this task you can see how well students imagine possible hypotheses and plan out systematically testing the possibilities. For specific factual laboratory skills, you might design a battery of multiple-choice questions with one for each skill (e.g., read the level of this graduated cylinder with the correct answer and common mistakes). Thanks a ton Kevin Grobman.....will go through the link too.....i am sure it will be helpful.....It will be great if you can suggest some standardised (integrated or basic)science process skill test used by researchers for middle school (9th grade). I will then alter it our school conditions.
Glad it could help! I’ve run studies with Piagetian Formal Operations tasks (in person) and the data can be messy, though probably the most meaningful measure of scientific reasoning. I’ve also used multiple-choice versions which are probably easier for mass data collection online even if less detailed.
