For the compounding of rubbers (NR and SBR), I have noticed that most of the plasticizers (Rubber process oils), be it mineral- based or bio-sourced, they all have a flash-point higher than 200C. Is there any pre-requisite for the minimum flash point of a plasticizer- If yes, then why? What would happen if the flash point of the plasticizer is around 150 C or lesser.
Flash point means that the fumes of that compound can ignite. CAN not will, i.e. most likely nothing will happen but it might also happen that you and your lab might turn into an inferno within seconds.
in other words: better avoid going above the flash point. That’s plainly dangerous and you need to be aware that in case something happens the university insurance might refuse to pay because you did something knowingly unsafe.
I did elongational rheology with silicone oils with flash points as low as 130°C and the measurement temperature was always above 150°C. That means you need to be careful to keep any source of ignition away and remove fumes quickly. Also you should have a fire extinguisher nearby.
One of the aspect is releted to mineral oil and aromaticity or PAH content. But correlation with this is higher that 200 deg.C of course. If you need more info, feel free to contact me any time.

In one study before years, I can not find it now, we found comparism of flash point and destilation analysis and PAH content. I don´t think exact correltion in mathemathical menaing to clarify my previous reply.

During mastication of rubbers on a two roll mill (average temperature may be around 70-90 deg C while that in an internal mixers it may rang between 150 to 180 deg C depending on the speed of mixing. Temperature should not be very high to avoid degradation of rubber. Hence the plasticizers flash point ( the temperature at which its vapors will ignite and catch fire) should be higher than the above temp. range. This is the reason for flash point of plasticizers to be kept above 200 deg.C
