AE stands for the tetracycline resistance determinants A to E. There are numerous Tet determinants (Tet(A), Tet(B), Tet(C), Tet(D), Tet(E), Tet(G), Tet(H), Tet(J), Tet(K), Tet(L), Tet(M), Tet(O), Tet(P), Tet(Q), Tet(S), Tet(T), Tet(V), Tet(W), Tet(X), Tet(Y), Tet(Z) and Tet(##)) with different resistance mechanisms. For example:

• Tet(A) to Tet(E), Tet(K) and Tet(L): efflux
• Tet(M) and Tet(O): ribosomal protection
• Tet(X): degradation

Different kinds of Tet efflux pumps:

Tet(A-E) or (AE): efflux pump of aerobic, enteric gram-negative bacteria

Tet(K): efflux pump of Staphylococcus
