What is the main motivation to write a peer review for a research manuscript?
1. Participate in the peer-reviewed process?
2. Curiosity to see something new and interesting?
3. To be a good citizen?
4. Finding relevance to your research?
5. Desire for learning?
6. Guarding the field?
7. Become a professional reviewer?
8. Difficult to say NO to editor?
9. Or else?
My answer is "none of above." Peer review is a category of scholarly work. It goes on my CV.

- It helps stay on top of your field (I usually only except if I would want to read the article if it were published). You get to read the newest work. Work that may not be published for months or even years.
- critically reflecting on other people's work improves your own argumentation and writing.
What is the main motivation to write a peer review for a research manuscript?
For me is no. 1-7. Also when I'd completed each review I can submit my record to Publons to get some merit points in their system. If you want to know more about Publons, you can refer to the following link:

For me answers 1, 2, 3 & 5 are strong reasons. 4 is nice in theory but hasn't been my experience. Not so sure about 6, but 7 is a big no as far as I'm concerned. Seems that the purposes of a professional reviewer vs. a peer are at odds with another.
Recognition of your own work on the field by the editor, relevance to your research and learn about the newest advances. Sometimes help other colleagues who proposed you as a reviewer to improve...
In connection with Han Ping Fung's answer, I just would like to note that Elsevier has recently launched a somewhat similar to Publons service for referees for its own journals
