I do research in biophysics (involves a combo of chemistry, physics and biology). It seems that research is increasingly become prohibitively expensive with equipment and reagents being very costly and therefore difficult to get sufficient funding for.
I'd like to start directing my research towards an area that I can actually afford to do considering the finite amount of funding available.
Other than theoretical work, what is the least expensive field in the life sciences?

Preparation of model membranes (e.g. liposomes and nanoliposomes" using Mozafari Method is very economic. This is because there is no need of using organic solvents in this method, also it is only a one-step procedure. Let me know if you need more information or details.
