In the chemical activation of activated carbons, it is given that impregnation ratios are playing major roles in determining the properties of activated carbons. Can someone give me the detailed descriptions about that? and also how can one calculate impregnation ratio?
Impregnation ratio refers to chemical activation. It is simply the mass of activating agent (H3PO4, KOH, etc.) divided by the mass of organic material that has to be converted into activated carbon (generally biomass, but not only, it can be non-activated porous carbon as well). It is true that, more than temperature or any other experimental parameter, the porous texture obtained after heat treatment of the impregnated material depends mainly on the amount of activating agent per unit weight of precursor. In other words, impregnation ratio has a major effect. This is at least what we always found in our works, that you can download on my RG profile.

If we are using H3PO4 as activating agent, how will you calculate the mass of H3PO4 inorder to calculate impregnation ratio?. and also for chemical activation, we used to prepare activating agents interms of % like (10%,20% & 30%), in that case how the impregnation ratio will change?
