dear Sir, physician to patient ratio is not clear in a closed ICU model. Main workforceplanning lies in the number of nurses. Usually in a 12 bed closed ICU the nurse: patient ratio is 1:1, with 1 intensivist present 24/7.
dear Dr. Al-etreby, the studies you mentioned are all good studies. Staffing issues do indeed vary among intensive care units. In the Netherlands we use three different levels of ICU's (level 1 to level 3) in which level 1 is most difficult ICU and level 3 the most easy one. Level 1 ICU's are usually found in tertiary care hospitals and level 3 ICU's in smaller, general hospitals. Staffing in level 1 ICU's are more extreme (24/7) and higher patient:nurse ratio. If there is anything I can do to help you, either with staffing calculations, or with mortality calculations, please let me know.
