Obviously, smart grid technology is growing fast. Its contribution to energy efficiency and sustainability is undeniable. I would like to see deep in to it, what it is like, what advantages and disadvantages it might have. Smart grids are designed to:
1) Reduce the electricity demand load on the utility grid during daily peak demand periods.
2) Support renewable energy generation via distributed energy systems (DES) wind turbine farms, solar PV, concentrated solar power (CSP), and fuel cells stations.
3) Create independence of the utility grids in remote areas.
Accordingly, I'd say that market penetration by large-scale renewable energy systems relies on the presence of smart grids as well as distributed energy storage (DES) to offset the incompetency of renewable sources such as wind turbines, solar PV, CSP, etc.

I guess advanced communication protocols (especially the consensus), energy Internet, and energy storage technologies are among the most important future developments in power grids of different sizes and scales. Such enhancements are expected to contribute in extending the definition of smart grid from structural, technological, and capabilities points of view. At least they will improve the automation level of the power systems to eventually reach the formal smart level of automation.
In my point of view, I think that there is There is a great tendency to apply the big data, and topics such as ''Microgrids and Distributed Resources, cybersecurity and privacy, Dynamic Pricing and Data Management'' will pick the highest interest by the researchers.

Disadvantages:
1) Smart grids are susceptible to cyber attacks. Back-doors such as smart meters could be a source of vulnerability.
2) Power from smart grids, if not well-coordinated with the utility grid could cause power instability on the grid.

as a disadvantages, i think the vulnerability , the informatin weak security and the pricing was the bigest disadvantages and they lead to a real challenge in the future.

There are several disadvantages, or rather obstacles currently:
1. Capital Costs and how those costs are recouped from a utility customer rate base. While in theory all business cases for smart grid are positive, the immediate sticker shock to the end customers may be a major obstacle. A business case that makes sense to the consumer and utility needs to drive the adoption of these technologies.
2. Several technologies remain proprietary creating an issue of interoperability. This is a major concern and add-on for utility costs where an organization needs multiple head-end systems to manage every piece of technology.
3. Latency. This is tied to interoperability. Various technology nodes require minimum amounts of latency to ensure performance, safety and quality of service. Because different technologies may not speak in a native language to once another, additional latency is introduced throughout the communication chain as protocol adapters are required.
4. Cybersecurity. This is a very real issue at the application, network and physical layers. This is further complicated by interoperability and proprietary nature of technologies, wireless interference, etc.
5. Privacy. AMI and interval meters provide granular energy/demand data about an installation. Usage profiles allow utilities to interpolate behaviours, work schedules, how many people live in a residence, types of equipment at a home (hot tub), heating/cooling systems (oil), etc. While this information has traditionally remained in the utility, there has been a trend in the technology industry to sell data to third-parties to enhance an analytic offering. Any data that is shared with third-parties typically has explicit permission from the consumer, however the days of data sharing clauses embedded in user agreements could be on the horizon.
Just to expand on Yehia's advantages.
1. Shifting peak demand periods. Utilities incorporating demand shifting technologies can provide value to all their rate base and preserve much of their revenues. Depending on the regulatory environment, shifting demand will allow utilities to manage their excess capacity and utilize this in off-peak periods. The benefit is foregoing the construction of new generation capacity, in addition to fully utilizing intermittent renewable energy sources.
2. Granular energy data. Having granular energy, demand. voltage, power factor data enables an enormous amount of intelligence to be produced about consumers behaviours and can deliver information required to justify energy efficiency and other technology investments. This has enabled an entire technology segment focused on energy analytics and value-added services to consumers.
Smart grid technology is not single concept its contained all latest technology for example advance metering infrastructure, distributed generation, demand side management etc

most of us tend to think that power demand must be destined to rise steadily in the coming decades , so there are three three landmarks of the downstream Smart Grid.
1. Customer control systems repay to prices
2. Smaller local generators (DG) or wind /PVGen .
3. Greater levels of storage
Advantages of smart grid technologies:
1 "rapid" load balancing in networks with extreme (minimum, maximum) energy consumption values
Disadvantages:
1 poorly developed infrastructure for the effective use of this technology
2 staff’s lack of readiness to use this technology effectively (not everyone has Yale University :) - a joke)
3 the absence of cheap superconducting solutions at the moment and, consequently, large energy losses in the transmission of energy over large distances
The colleagues gave definitions for the smart grid, its advantage and disadvantage. I would say that smart grid in a broad sense is a grid with more smart control and embedded artificial intelligence in its generation , its transmission and its distribution and consumption.Smart grid organizes the generation and consumption processes to the save electricity.
