Well, first I’d like to point that although many films produced in Hollywood are indeed original works, most of them are actually adaptations of literary sf works, and of those which aren’t have been at least loosely influenced by some other sf literature. However, I’d like to also note that Hollywood does lots of research and consultation with experts from many areas prior to deciding on, for instance, visual effects. For example, for the production of Arrival (2016), they hired real life linguists so the film could appear convincing. On those grounds, hiring people who actually work on technology industries would be very handy while deciding on what is plausible future technology or not.
