The International Business research is promising. Thought-leaders will be carving out the IB-related research questions and theories through COVID-19 pandemic.

International Business Research may take new avenues/ vistas in terms of defining/ redefining, formulating or reformulating trade relations that would be determined more based on geographical proximity, cultural systems, etc.. as discussed in some of the theories, such as the gravity theory, etc. I don't subscribe to bringing the older theories back into discussion, but, we need to wait and see how the national economies and regional economies would come closer or part between in the post-Covid context based on the hard realities that they have been experiencing in terms of engaging into trade and business transactions during these heightened days of pandemic Covid-19.

The world of IB is vibrant and stimulating. Current IB research is not.

Managers engaged in IB are energetic, creative and risk-taking. Modern day IB scholars are not.

Media stories covering IB are novel, engaging and eye-catching. Recent IB journal publications are not.

Unless the majority of IB scholars acknowledges such challenges and starts try to produce another type of research output, there will be no future of IB research.

My personal belief:

It is going to be a very interesting time for International Business (IB) - for all scholars, entrepreneurs, managers and billionaires.

Supply chain issues, border closures and travel restrictions, WFH will impact the way organizations work and have evolved in the past. The new normal would mean creating robust systems, create localized solutions for global corporations, global diversification for local corporations, reduce "hot money" in the system, and focus on the newer business models. M&As and cross border investments will rise eventually with successful buying the not so successful as well as to build scale.

All in all, while I agree that these are possibly the toughest times we have (or ever will) see in our lives, IB is going to be very interesting.

There are some exceptional publications about world economy and they aren’t accessible by normal way and nobody was able to did anything about presented conclusions in them.

Hello, there is a great future for international business research as it is for other areas. Currently, several studies have been conducted on international business practices but he benefits are yet to be explored by foreign governments, business owners, and leaders of multinationals because they either do not consider the findings of these studies in their decisions or they do not have access to these findings. Scholar-practitioners are to begin to bridge these identified gaps for studies conducted.

Mudassir-Well, with respect, US domestic research is a big part of that future. You should consider that as well.

I would like to think that the human being will learn the lesson, after such a catastrophe (COVID19). But it is difficult, I think that unfortunately, we will return to the levels of exploitation and destruction of the planet and its pre-COVID natural resources. As should be the future, the future of international trade, I imagine trading, quotas (carbon, water use, energy efficiency among others, not consumer goods), trading knowledge and patents not physical resources, each country or region should survive a self-sustaining base. That it should tend to reduce the volumes traded. If we want to survive we have to reduce water consumption, deforestation and desertification.

We must promote changes in the economic model, going from predatory capitalism to more sustainable production, with limits to production that allow us to extend the life of our greatest value, our home, land, and two that guarantee basic needs over-enrichment of a few private economic groups. And use the same management model that we use today in our companies with our planet. "minimization of costs and maximization of benefits". Since we do not set consumption limits today, we will generate total shortages tomorrow.

We must stop promoting harmful and useless industries, it is not enough with taxes or other must disappear and others are limited, the tobacco industry, the production of weapons, junk food, soft drinks and thousands of other industries that pollute and do not provide a real utility to human life, another interesting measure is to increase the rules of programmed obsolescence so that consumer goods last longer and are not replaced until they are no longer useful, who needs 3 or 4 cell phones or 20 pairs of shoes? I believe that there will still be a great need for international research in business. Research will be in the domain of joint problems, such as the concept of sustainable development, the impact of climate change on business, migration etc. But states must intensify research, too. Many countries have focused on foreign investment. That is the wrong approach, for me. I think that each country should determine what its advantages are, and what are not, in business. Then, determine which economies of other countries to cooperate with intensively, and with which less. The philosophy of science has pointed out that research depends not only on the level of knowledge, but also on the capacity of scientists. Scientists are a trinity of mind, emotion and spirituality. Scientists in their country, with their comprehensiveness, will best notice the directions of research and give the best solutions. And the history of science confirms that. We can take the example of two contemporaries, Tesla and Edison. Both have given great welfare to humanity. Edison, a pragmatist, provided many scientific and engineering solutions for his life and shortly thereafter. Tesla, the son of a Serbian Orthodox priest, many years after his physical disappearance, continues to provide knowledge and will continue to do so in the future. During his life, Edison had a good standard, and Tesla died in poverty.

I think there needs to be a lot more research on anti-fragile systems. I see the occasional paper out there. But not a plethora of studies. Maybe even a journal of Anti-fragile systems.

It depends on the type of research. Anything to connect people is viable.

Hi Peter Stuchlik, that's an interesting issue altogether, which needs to be debated at length, more from a political economy perspective. The question to debate is: "whether the global crisis (of business and life) has been a mediated and moderated one", if so, "who are the real culprits and how do we expose those mediators/ moderators", making them responsible; of course, "how we can make them responsible to pay for the reparations or the damages that the global economy and society suffered", is a mute question.

Anytime in a case like is this one I have to remind one psalm from the Bible to myself: “My Lord, please, give me a power to change, what I am able to change. Give me patience to withstand, what I am not able to change. For each 20 years period there are 4 the main world economic drivers. Any business succes or research is under their influence. Trying to do something else is a reason why dynosauria disapeard.

Hi Maya. Omar Khayan was ancient philosopher, mathematician, writer and poet on the end of 11th and beginning of 12th century. We wrote wonderful verses and very untypical for that age, region and philosophy. I like him more as Seneca because Khayan described the real live, his poetry is still living.

I think in the actual context of Covid all the technological platforms are open and conecting a lot of people from different places. In my case, I am having the opportunity to participate inside Cladea with international professionals in a international research related to supply chain inside companies of different countries, for preparing a paper with our results in the future. I think the business reseach and research, in general, depends on teamwork players with actitude to colaborate with each other to obtain positive results and a win-win objective for all.

Everything is possible. Just imagine the special economic export-oriented zone which now embraces the three former bitter enemies - Israel, Egypt and Jordan.

The oldest living cross-border crowdfunding model is the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

ITs were one from the main world economic drivers during the past economic cycle. In presence they are developing for more utilizations and applications. Nevertheless, one from the present main drivers is “capital concentration and accumulation”. Therefore, next development of ITs is powerful tool for realization of this.

In my opinion, the future of international business research will be determined by various factors influencing the development of international economic cooperation, cross-border capital flows and other factors of production, the scale and type of protectionism instruments used limiting international trade, etc. Currently, the significant factors are the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (Covid -19), trade wars waged between some large economies, new instruments of protectionism imposed, embargoes imposed on the supply of certain assortments of products, technologies or other production factors, international monetary policy shaped by the largest central banks, such as the European Central Bank, Federal Reserve Bank, etc., the scale of interconnection of international financial markets, including cyclical synergies on capital markets, etc. The emerging changes in this type of factors also cause changes in key issues undertaken as part of research in the field of international business research.

Covid is a fault of evolution, its one-way road. Evolution is about preserving of organism not killing its host. If you multiply reproduction cycle of this virus type with a time for creating of “genetic memory”, you will receive that approximately 1 year this fault will be with us.

In my opinion, the future of international business research will be determined by changes in the differences in the pace of economic development of individual countries (and international flows of products, services, factors of production, capital, cross-border financial flows, activities of multinational corporations and economic globalization), the development of new technologies that will be applied in various sectors and economic sectors in different countries (e.g. new ecological technologies, biotechnologies, agrotechnology, environmental engineering, information technologies ICT, Industry 4.0 and others, technological globalization) and Internet information globalization (free access to knowledge).

A recent Forbes article from a couple of days ago (I'll get the cite if you need it) predicts that the effects on academe in the US will be there for the next 10 years. Even if the vaccine takes (and the jury is out on that, especially with the untested one being used in a country that I won't repeat here) the psychological effects may be felt for a generation. So yes, with all of this, I fear the effects will be with us for a long time. Sorry I can't be more sanguine.

Kasili Mutambo That being said, all of the areas you have mentioned are businesses to begin with. You do mention innovative disruptions, which innovative technology speaks to as one area. Innovative sales approaches, going for markets where buyers have not been approached yet by established businesses are other examples. So future research are likely to focus on not only all of the industries you mention, but as a subset of the businesses that they are.

Disruption is the disturbance that interrupts event or process due to digital transformation arising from the adoption of advances in operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) driving efficiency and effectiveness in new thinking, administration, governance, manufacturing, marketing, learning, delivery, communication, coordination, sustainability, and so on. Examples of disruption artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles (Drones), machine learning, virtual machines, robotics, cloudy computing, internet of things, 3-D printing, automatic cars, electric cars (Nano), automated database advertisement, virtual reality in advertisement and gaming, augmented reality in gaming and content. Ongoing digital disruptions Google/Apple Apps, Facebook, Skype, Netflix, Twitter, WhatsApp, and so on. Thomas Hotz, disruption impacts mainly businesses, lives, and livelihoods as well.

Agreed, and disruption affects all business, but not just thru technology. Christensen discovered and elaborated on same-he died in January of this year. Technology is but one of the issues regarding innovative disruption; check his work for other issues I mentioned. He has done qualitative and I believe quantitative studies to this effect. His work has been criticized but time has upheld his theories. This is all in the US, I can't speak for international markets which may indeed fall into the technology purview. But the definition of innovative disruption is much broader than technology, although that is a common point to initiate disruption. Indeed any new inventions even not involving technology may influence disruption under the proper circumstances.
