Leaf area (A) can be simply calculated by multiplying the product of leaf length (L) and width (W) by a constant i.e. the Montgomery parameter, or MP, which you would have to look up :)

LAI = (Total leaf area of the plant) / (Ground area covered by the plant)
The leaf area of a single leaf can be calculated using the following formula:
Leaf area = (Length of leaf) x (Breadth of leaf) x 0.75
where 0.75 is a constant that represents the empirical relationship between the actual leaf area and the projected area of a leaf.
To find the total leaf area of the plant, the leaf area of all leaves in the plant can be summed up. Then, the ground area covered by the plant can be measured and used to calculate the LAI using the above formula.
