The concept of sustainability has become a buzzword among many research practitioners. Are there any examples of studies that depict collaboration between two areas of discipline to address sustainability?
Well really interesting question. Let begin with the main definition of sustainable development (SD). SD is the science by combining 3 main direction: Society-Economy-Nature. The explanation of the firsts parts disciplinary can be intra=within, inter=between, multi=many, trans=across the disciplinary studies. The philosophy intra-disciplinary / interdisciplinary / multidisciplinary / trans-disciplinary studies are given according to my PhD thesis on the Evaluation of Biodiversity in Sustainable Development Using GIS. My main publication 3D SD can be downloaded from my profile on www.researchgate.net.
Each of 3 dimensions has 6 sub-dimensions.
The extend of intra-disciplinary studies in an area of SD is the interaction of the subset of indicators in each sub-dimension, i.e Gene Stage.
The extend of inter-disciplinary studies in an area of SD is the interaction of 6 sub-dimensions between each dimension, i.e. Species Stage.
The meaning of multi-disciplinary studies in an area of SD is a key subject in SD considering the biodiversity approach, i.e. Functioning Stage.
The extend of trans-disciplinary studies in an area of SD is the interaction of either 18 sub-divisions or the interchange of 3 main dimensions between each other, i.e. Ecosystem Stage.
The aforementioned approach is a completely new approach, which i obtained during my trip in education for 3 various Master Degrees( MSc in Computer Science at SEUA, MSc in Industrial Engineering at AUA and MSc in Environmental Management, MAICh) and 2 PhDs(RE in Computer Science and PhD in SD using GIS, in Biodiversity concept towards 3D SD as an economic progress.
I would not say that the (socially constructed) sub-categories of sustainable development constitute disciplines.
In order to answer your question you must first define what research for sustainable development or sustainability research is. Then you need to define what inter/multi/trans-disciplinary research means...
From my point of view I think that there are loads of multi-disciplinary studies on sustainable development (i.e. studies involving more than one discipline). Interdisciplinary studies are a bit more rare, if you define interdisciplinary research as research where the different disciplines are merged rather than parallel. Transdisciplinary research, in the sense of also including other forms of knowledge than the one produced and made legitimate through academia, and/or in sense of letting other actors than researchers formulate research questions is a growing field.
But perhaps I misunderstood your question?
(By the way, "inter" means between, not within - which is intra. Compare internet and intranet).
