CEO’s role is most important in ensuring corporate sustainability. Corporate Sustainability can be achieved by implementing the concept of triple bottom line i.e people, planet and profit. CEO plays a pivotal role in clarifying and motivating the top management team to adopt the concept as a strategic concept. CEO is the prime mover to build up a symbiotic relationship among men, machine and environment. CEO is the person to impress upon top management team, the importance of social, environmental and ethical aspect of corporate governance. The implementation of above concept was amply demonstrated by Tata Group, which was founded in India in1868 by Jamshetji Tata, who once said, “In a free enterprise the community is not just another stake holder in business but in fact the very purpose of its existence”. The above concept appears to have been implanted in the DNA of Tata Group, which carried over the same through next generations of Tatas, particularly by Ratan Tata, who became chairman of Tata Group in 1991. This Indian corporate is a typical example of corporate sustainability.
Voluntary CEO-lead sustainability initiatives within industry sectors have been organized under the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Examples are the Tire Industry Project and the Cement Sustainability Initiative.
