If you mean tap water supplied centralised way and concentrations of main ions (HCO3, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cl, SO4, Na, CO3) you cannot reduce them in your house or that will be very costly (require using expensive ion-exchange filters). If you mean salts of heavy metals you can use various types of specific filters.

There are a number of ways to remove sodium and chloride from your home water supply. They are listed below:
Reverse osmosis: In a reverse osmosis filtration system, water flows through a membrane, filtering out some of the molecules within the water, including sodium and chloride. These molecules, plus some water, are flushed into your home’s wastewater system. The treated water is stored in a small storage tank until needed. This system can be installed at the point-of-use, such as at the kitchen sink, or could be used to treat the water for your whole house.
Distillation: A distillation system uses temperature change to evaporate and recondense clean water. Inorganic minerals, such as sodium and chloride, do not usually transfer into the condensed water, but some organic contaminants will. These systems are installed either under the sink or counter and can increase a home’s energy costs.
De-ionization: Similar to a water softener, in a deionization system water is filtered through a resin, but acids and bases are used rather than salt to regenerate the system. While it is effective, there are some hazardous chemicals required in running the system.

Dear Prathap,
I am fully agree with Dr. Achour for the proposed solution for saline water treatment. The RO units are available as home used easily opeation and maintance.
For well water salt removal RO Filter is best option. Ion exchange Softening increases alkalinity. ( Na- Alkalinity) which may not good for drinking
I would also suggest that RO would be the most readily available technology to implment

If I understand the question, it is a method to reduce the salt content in well water before water is taken for use. There is a method patented by me in 2015 in Ukraine. Basically it is to change the filtration properties of the soil in the area of the well supply. As a result, atmospheric power ultrafresh waters increases and decreases the total salt content. It also reduces the nitrate content - the main problem of manhole water. In concrete terms, there are specific quantitative parameters of soil reclamation.

The best option is to use RO. However if it is an open well, you must take care during heavy rain events. The run off may cause the water to be heavy polluted by turbidity which may affect the performance and life time of the RO system.
From a typical home owners perspective, in the United States, RO is the only practical means of reducing total dissolved solids (salt). A typical under the counter household RO will provide roughly a 75% reduction in salinity.
Osmosis should be used only in conjunction with subsequent dilution with the original water in the correct proportions. Otherwise, the problem threatens to wash out salts from the bones. But ground water can have in addition to increased salinity inappropriate man-made pollution. In this case, after the reverse osmosis water should be mixed with other non-polluting natural water with high salinity. This is troublesome. Therefore, I propose another way to reduce salt in groundwater - increasing revenues precipitation due to the engineering reclamation soil in the area of the well supply.
In general, household scale treatment does not provide water quality that will cause health issues. This is more of an issue with laboratory level treatment or municipal RO systems. Most of the home units are not nearly 100% efficient (as previously noted) and will likely not be a concern.
