I understand that for an IMPACT study we need to have a before and after study, but what about any research which is has an objective to assess the "effectiveness" of something?
Dear Leonidas, Thank you for the detailed explaination of the words with example from the research point of view. However, my question acually is hovering around the methodology of research. I know for a study on "impact of " has tohave a before and after study, but what about the methodology if I use the word effect? If you have explained that in your view already, then that is my shortcoming that I m unable to understand.
I am not sure your question is about. But I just want to make a commet. I am just curious.
My experiences tell me that there are many types of experimental study that are usually used to measure the impact of a specific treatment. I can say, pure experimental (which is almost impossible to implemented in social setting), and quasi experimental studies.
From the quasi experimental itself, there are several designs to use, such as:
a. post test only pre-experimental design, ... we just have one treatment group, and give them a post test to measure its impact. To see its impact, the result from the post test is compared to his criteria
b. pre-test post test pre-experimental design, ... we also have one treatment group, and give them a test before and after the treatment. To see its impact, the gain from the post test and pre-test are analysed.
c. post test only with control group experimental design ... we have two groups ... control and treatment groups ... the post tests from both groups are analyzed to see the impact of the treatment
d. pre-test post-test with control group experimental design ... we have two groups ... control and treatment groups ... the analysis could use their post tests only but their pre test is also used as co-variate data.
(So sorry if the terminology is incorrect).
All of these designs are usually applied to study the effect or the impact of a treatment conducted by the researcher
On the other hand, the effectiveness design of study is usually used to evaluate the existing program conducted by others. The researcher does not provide any treatment in the evaluation type of study. They just investigate the existing treatment conducted by other. In the experimental type of study, the researcher is the one who implement the treatment and at the same time evaluate its impact.
I differentiate the term "the effect" and "the effectiveness". I am so sorry. That's why I agree with what Leonidas explained to you.
I don't know whether this answers your question or not.
