Just had a quick question which I'm having difficulty with tracking down via web searches.
I'm working quite extensively as a psychometrist with non-native English speakers as well as populations with minimal to no expressive language ability.
My question is, both the CTONI and the Raven's minimize the impacts of language skills and cultural differences. When we do assessments online, we would choose the Raven's 2, when assessments are done in-person, the CTONI is used. Aside from the Raven's being available as an online digital solution, would there be any other reason to not also use the Raven's 2 in person? Are there advantages to using the CTONI over the Raven's (or vice versa) with populations whose first language isn't English or would require an interpreter?

The CTONI and the Raven's are both nonverbal tests of intelligence that minimize the effects of language and culture on test performance. They both use abstract visual stimuli and require the test takers to identify patterns, relationships, and analogies among the stimuli. However, they also have some differences in their design, administration, and interpretation.
The CTONI is a comprehensive test that consists of six subtests: Pictorial Analogies, Geometric Analogies, Pictorial Categories, Geometric Categories, Pictorial Sequences, and Geometric Sequences. The subtests measure different aspects of nonverbal reasoning, such as analogical reasoning, categorical classification, and sequential reasoning. The CTONI can be administered individually or in groups, and it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The CTONI provides three composite scores: Nonverbal Intelligence Quotient (NIQ), Analogical Reasoning (AR), and Categorical Classification/Sequential Reasoning (CSR). The CTONI also provides age-based norms and percentile ranks for each subtest and composite score.
The Raven's is a single test that consists of 60 items arranged in five sets (A to E) of 12 items each. The items are matrices with a missing part that the test taker has to select from six or eight alternatives. The items increase in difficulty within and across sets. The Raven's can be administered individually or in groups, and it takes about 40 to 60 minutes to complete. The Raven's provides a single score: Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) score. The Raven's also provides age-based norms and percentile ranks for the SPM score.
Some advantages of using the CTONI over the Raven's are:
- The CTONI covers a broader range of nonverbal abilities than the Raven's, which mainly measures abstract reasoning.
- The CTONI provides more detailed information about the strengths and weaknesses of the test taker than the Raven's, which only provides a global measure of nonverbal intelligence.
- The CTONI has more updated norms than the Raven's, which was last revised in 2000.
Some advantages of using the Raven's over the CTONI are:
- The Raven's is more widely used and recognized than the CTONI, especially in research and cross-cultural studies.
- The Raven's is simpler and faster to administer and score than the CTONI, which requires more materials and procedures.
