respected madam, there is very subtle difference between the two. Ideally, repeated cross sectional study is that you take cross section of given population at different time frame and then define the changes in given parameter for example the weight of 5years old child in year 2015, 2016 and 2017 or mortality in 2015, 2016 and 2017 etc. Please note that you measure different participant at different time frame in repeated cross sectional study for example the child measured in 2016 may or may not be the same as measured in 2015. Now longitudinal study is suppose you have a cohort of 5yrs old in 2015 and you measure their weight and then in the year 2016 and 2017 you repeated the measurement on same child and hence as year increases, age of the child also increases.
Psuedo-longitudinal study are variant of repeated cross-sectional study in which both year and age increases of the child in repeated cross-sectional study. for example a 5years old child weight measured in 2015 is compared with weigh measured of 6 years old child in 2016 though the child measured in 2015 and 2016 are different. hence one of the prerequisite of the pseudo-crossectional study is random sampling i.e. child weigh at 2015 is representative of 5 yrs old child and child weigh at 2016 is representative of 6 yrs old child.
Thanks a lot for detailed response by Arun Kumar Yadav,
Repeated surveys mean cross sectional studies at same time during next times. Please consider the repeated measurements on variables of same participants at t0, t1, .., so on during limited period in comparison to longitudinal studies.
Thanks Arun. Are repeated surveys or surveillance data over time example of descriptive study or cross sectional or pseudo longitudinal. Lancet refers them as descriptive study.
Observational study have been categorised as descriptive and analytical. The cardinal difference between two is one is done to generate hypothesis (observational) and other to test the preformed hypothesis (analytical). In this sense case series, cross-sectional study, repeated surveys, surveillance data or pseudo-longitudinal study are all types of descriptive study.
My question is probably not well framed. You have again mentioned cross sectional and repeated surveys as separate entities. My question is whether repeated surveys are cross sectional studies or longitudinal or pseudo longitudinal?
Good evening madam, cross-sectional study you collect data only once. now there are two confusing terms repeated surveys and longitudinal survey. Repeated surveys are when cross-sectional studies are repeated in the same population over different time periods for a defined purpose (note necessary the same individuals) like NFHS 1, NFHS2, NFHS3, NFHS4 etc and longitudinal study are when a defined population is followed up for a given period of time. For difference in repeated surveys, longitudinal studies and pseudolongitudinal study please refer to my earlier answer.
I think the question needs to be rephrased. Well, if at all the aim is to give out the differences. At present, the question itself is confusing.
Evidence: We refer to/speak about repeated measurements when there are multiple measurements taken, without fixing time and volunteers/subjects by design. Conversely, a longitudinal design happens when you follow up the same subjects/volunteers at multiple points in time. Moreover, a cross-sectional design happens when volunteers/subjects have their measurements (both exposure and outcomes) taken at a single specified time point. By default in both cases, the concept of cross-sectional design does not hold.
