I have an avid interest in studying the relationships between "emotional regulation" and "job crafting" but I couldn't find the fundamental difference between these two constructs; "emotional labor" and "emotional regulation."
Emotional labor refers to the situation where the role occupied by an individual requires that individual to display a certain emotion - a façade. Whereas, emotional regulation is the effort of the individual to manage his/her own emotions the way he/she wishes.
If you understand the difference between a 'role; and an 'individual', you should be able to crack this easily. A comparable example would be role-conflict and inter-personal conflict.
Emotional labor is related with personal movement and spirit to conduct their obligation, either positive emotion that would be good for the job nor negative emotion what would be bad for the job itself.
Meanwhile emotional regulation is related with personal principles that highly affect to the role established to managing works, which could be positive if it could attract other worker more productive or comfortable, but it could be negative when the productivity of the worker decreases or made be not comfortable, etc.
The adherence/ attentiveness to display rules, only differentiates between emotional labour and emotion regulation.
Moreover, the context of control of emotion is also vital for differentiating EL and ER.
The most important difference is bedded in the definition of EL given by Hochschild (1979), which have clear mention that emotion labour is control of emotion at work and have exchange value.
Thus, any emotion regulation which is intended to influence behaviour of others, controlled by the employer and the employee is paid for emotional display as per norms is emotional labour. And all other controlled emotional displays are emotion regulation.
