As i know surface area is the most important paramiter for Pt counter electrode for electrochemical measurement. It seems that the flat electrode has a larger surface then mesh electrode. Why and in what cases are mesh electrodes used? What is their advantage?

The platinum grid, contrary to appearances, has a much larger surface area than a flat electrode. That is why flat electrodes are used in direct current tests, where they only serve to transmit or receive the current flowing in the system in order to polarize the tested electrode. In the case of impedance tests (EIS), where the lowest possible impedance of the auxiliary electrode is important, a platinum grid is used/recommended.
