I am current going through the book by Belytschko et al. where they mention that Malvern(1969) made a distinction between "material particles" and "material points". Can you tell me what is the difference between these two terms ?
In my knowledge the notation of material points are used to define a continuous mapping(or smooth mapping with finite numbers of discontinuities) between deformed configuration and initial configuration. Is it true that material particles represent a finite subset of material points?
It is funny that I am answering to my own question. However, I found the description of points and particles in a text book. Points are fixed in the space while particles can change their position with time. In other words, for any fixed time t, the position of a particle is given by a point.
