Hi, I'm using TGA in order to conduct a thermal degradation for the characterization of graphite and graphene combustion temperature.
I need to know what is the combustion temperature at which both materials combust?
I am getting a temperature of 811 C in order to burn half of the sample weight of exfoliated graphite. Is this logical?
Amorphous carbon starts burning at around 300 oC. Graphite will start burning (producing CO2 + CO) above 700 - 800 oC.
Generally, at higher temperature, more CO instead of CO2 will be produced by the oxidation.
You can find a lot of information online (just search for 'graphite TGA' or 'amorphous carbon TGA').
I do not know about graphene.
Graphitic carbons start decomposing well above 300 degC in Air or O2 gas flow and continue to 700 degC.
If applying N2, carbon decomposition won't happen but removal of moisture, volatile and organic residues. and functional groups.
