In general, SE provides surface topography - quasi-3D pictures, BSE provides information about surface heterogeneity. BSE is more suitable for metals microstructure. Modern microscopes can operate in both modes simultaneously with adjusted rate SE/BSE signal.

We have used SE mode to determine the surface morphology of our samples (Ceramics/Ferrites) while BSE was used to identify the secondary phases and sometimes magnetic precipitates and boundaries in our sample.
