I am interested in nutrient cations such as Magnesium, calcium and potassium in the litter-layer of forest soils. Analyzing total Mg, Ca and K content of the litter is quite straight forward (acid digestion), but extracting the exchangeable cations from the litter-layer is more tricky. For soil samples, I use KCl or NH4 acetate as an extractant but I carry out 2 sequential extractions. For litter samples, I haven't found a way to do 2 sequential extractions because organic matter floats and it is difficult to recover the entire solid sample after the first extraction. Does anyone know which protocols have the best extraction recovery?
