I am researching functioning and emotional distress among working parents with mental health difficulties. I need to access a "normal" group of working parents to act as a comparison. I would appreciate any advice on how to recruit a group from the "normal" population that would span the gender, age and socioeconomic range. Many thanks
Thank you for your answer. Yes, I think I want a "general population" sample. But is the best way to approach local organisations, or use local media/newspapers? I would appreciate any advice you or anyone else has on how to actually find these individuals and to get a good sample size
Not to be a pain, but why do you need a "normal" control group in the first place? A control is usually used so that you can clearly observe the impact of a treatment relative to a counterfactual. Sometimes, such as in placebo-controlled studies, you're adjusting for the fact that any intervention tends to change individual reports and so you need a specific counterfactual. Here, though, it sounds like you're just wanting to compare individuals with and without mental health issues. That being the case, a random sample of the general population (like the one described by Chamara) mixed with an over-sample of those with mental health issues should do the trick.
