Usually people are using EDAX to analyze the element content, but is it possible to find out the exact carbon:oxygen ratio present in reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide using EDAX or any other method? Some one suggested to me to use NMR, whether that is the correct option or not, I want to know about it.
Indeed XPS, FT-IR, NMR techniques are typically used. Each one gives you local contribution and in which state is oxygen bonded (XPS) or relative to specific peaks (FT-IR) but need calibration or NMR as adjuvant to the first two methods. Still remain analytical methods to evaluate chemical composition for quantitative. CNOS total or gas chromatography or both remain basics. XPS , FT-IR , NMR give you structural and topographical arrangements. Do not forget titration methods such as ancient alkalimetry or similar. Seems we forgot basics.
For this, in my view, you can use, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)..
From NMR is little bit complicated and not sure that you will get. The best possible way is XPS as suggested and if you have XRF facility then you can also get it.
With addition XPS, you do FTIR also.

Elemental analysis will work, but you should run the sample multiple times to make sure your result is reproducible.
XPS is the best tool to do the job. However, in my view, EDAX also will give a rough idea of C/O ratio. But you have to analyze several points of your sample and average it.
In my view, NCHSO analyzer is the best one. because XPS is made for surface not whole of sample.
XPS is performed in vacuum conditions and there is a certain penetration of the x-rays in the thick film you provide for xps analysis. Its sensitivity is much better than EDX. It is not only the surface but also the below it, the x-rays are able to penetrate and give you the signal.
If you still doubt than perform your xps analysis with a film on a Si substrate and you will also find the Si xps peaks alone with your data. So chose a substrate which does not contain ur elements.
Thank everyone for your valuable comments, if i want to take NMR which solvent you prefer, i referred some papers they used water for graphene oxide but i didn't find out the solvent for reduced graphene oxide usually people are using solid state NMR, but here we don't have SSNMR so please advice the suitable solvents for the analysis.
In the EDAX analysis people will focus on a particular area or point in the sample grid so it will give elemental content on the particular point, how we can calculate for our total substance, i think i will make some error i don't have much more knowledge about the CNS analysis really it will works. In near to my place XPS facility is not available, Can any one explain about the using NMR to find out the C,O ratio in graphene meterial?
In my view, NCHSO analyzer is the best one.it will give you the exact amount of C and O. it works based on Gas chromatography.
You should do elemental analysis and do XPS for reduced graphene oxide
