We have at Al-Quds University a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) which is capable of treating such water.

Herein the description of the plant:

The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Al-Quds University collects a mixture of black, gray and storm water. The treatment plant consists of a primary treatment (two stage primary settling basin), and a secondary treatment (activated sludge with a hydraulic retention time of 16-20 hours, coagulation and chlorination). The secondary effluent is introduced into a sand filter before entering the ultra filtration (UF)membrane (Hollow fiber and Spiral wound). After the ultrafiltration process, the effluent is subjected to activated carbon adsorbers followed by reverse osmosis (advanced treatment). All effluents at different mixing ratios are used for an experimental programme of field irrigation. The ultrafiltration process consists of two small

scale membrane treatment plants with a capacity of 12 m3 per day. The first UF unit is equipped with two 2 x 4 inch pressure vessels with pressure resistance up to 150 psi. Each vessel holds two separation membranes (spiral wound with kDa cut-off, equivalent to 0.01 micron separation rate). The designed permeate capacity of the system is 0.5- 0.8 m3 h-1. This membrane can remove bacteria, suspended solids, turbidity agents, oil and emulsions. The second unit is equipped with two pressure vessels made from Vendor (AST technologies, model number 8000 WW 1000-2M) that houses the hollow fiber membranes with 100 kDa cut-off (Vendor, AST

technologies, Model no. 8000- WWOUT-IN-8080). The two units are designed to deliver 1.5 m3 h-1. The reverse osmosis (RO) system consists of 1 x 4 inch pressure vessel constructed with composite material having a pressure resistance up to 400 psi. The vessel holds two 4 inches special separation membranes (thin polyamide film with pH range 1-11, model BW30-4040 by DOW Film Tec.). Membrane anti-scaler (Product NCS-106-FG, solution of phosphoric acid disodium salt) is continuously dosed to the RO feed at concentration of 4 mg L-1 in order to prevent deposition of divalent ions. The system is designed to remove major ions and heavy metals. The designed RO permeate capacity of the system is 0.45- 0.50 m3 h-1.

Recently, we have added to two columns of ODTMA-clay micelle complex; one before the SW membrane and the other before the RO membrane to eliminate fouling.

Thanks for your answer but, our problem is wastewater production in only 5-7 month. In this situation we can not apply biological method in ordinary systems.

Abstract

The valorization of wastewaters from the fish canning industry is of great concern, not only because of the high quantities generated, but also economic and environmental benefits may result from a proper treatment approach of the waste generated while reducing costs related to wastewater discharge.

A limiting factor for reuse and recycling treated fish canning wastewater into an industrial plant and also for other uses is the high salt content, which persists even after conventional treatment. So, the reuse of fish canning industrial wastewater was assessed by combining conventional treatments, such as sedimentation, chemical coagulation-flocculation and aerobic biological degradation (activated sludge process) followed by a polishing step by reverse osmosis (RO) and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.

In this investigation all these processes were optimized in order to remove essentially the effluent suspended particles (primary treatment), the organic matter content in the biological aerated reactor (secondary treatment) and, finally, the remaining salts and microorganisms (tertiary treatment).

The overall removal efficiencies obtained were: 99.9% for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), 99.8% for oil and grease (O&G), 98.4% for total suspended solids (TSS), above 96% for anions and cations and 100% for heterotrophic bacteria expressed as colony-forming units (CFU). The final clarified effluent was found to have the quality requirements to be recycled or reused in the industrial plant, allowing the reduction of the effluent to be discharged, the water use and the costs of tap water for industrial use.

As regards the energy and chemicals costs, to obtain a treated effluent to be reused in the process costs 0.85 €/m3. This value can be reduced by about 60% if the goal is only to meet the legislated standards for the effluent discharge into water bodies. Tap water for the industrial plant costs about 2.1 €/m3.

The main environmental problems of fish canning industries are high water consumption and

located north of Douro river, in Portugal, in order to propose various solutions to their problems. Thus,

initially it was made an identification and implementati

on of prevent and control pollution measures within

the industrial units in order to reduce water consump

tion, minimize the wastewater

production and reduce the

pollutant load to treat. Then, the evaluation of wast

ewater treatability was started through a sedimentation

and coagulation-flocculation process, with two organic coagulants (RIPOL 070 and RIFLOC 1815),

commonly used in wastewater treatment. Sedimentation experiments showed that the flotation of 54% of oils

and greases occurred, and 36% of to

tal suspended solids were removed. The coagulation-flocculation process

gave good results, especially in terms of oil and grease and total suspended solids removal. The best

suspended solids removal efficiencies were 53% and 79%, using 400 mg/L of RIPOL 070 and 150 mg/L of

RIFLOC 1815, respectively. At these dosages, both

coagulants demonstrated excellent oil and grease

removals, about 99% for RIFLOC 1815 and 88% for RIPOL 070.

 Clean technologies for wastewater management in seafood canning industries

Abstract

Fish canning industries generate a large number of different wastewaters that usually are treated together in a huge and complex plant, which implies high installation and maintenance costs (personnel, electricity, supplies, etc.). This paper shows that a better wastewater treatment management can be achieved if the different streams are treated as a function of their main characteristics (high organic content, low organic content, high solids content). Two scenarios are compared: i) one single plant to treat the overall effluent and, ii) a plant comprising different lines to treat the three streams resulting from the collection of similar wastewaters. In terms of investment and operational costs and, especially, removal efficiency, this latter strategy is clearly more favourable.

An additional advantage for the second scenario is that some of the main polluted effluents generated by this industrial sector can be further processed in order to obtain valuable subproducts, with the additional consequence of a substantial reduction of the organic load and volume to be treated in the wastewaters treatment plant. The production of fish-meal has been traditionally the only measure followed in this sense, in order to recover part of the rests of fish rejected during manufacturing processes. This paper shows three examples of this strategy: i) the potential reuse of the water discharged during the sterilisation step; ii) the development of a process to obtain valuable oil from the floating matter sludges separated by flotation devices; iii) the studies focussed on the processing of tuna cooking effluents in order to obtain a protein concentrate as a complement for animal foodstuff.
