What is the best method for isolating high purity eucalyptol from eucalyptus oil? Please provide references, if any. I have heard of distillation with cresols; is it worth it to get purity and yield? Or is there any other process?
Just buy it, it's dirt cheap. You can isolate it on a column too, but the silica and the solvents will cost you more in the end.
You may opt fractional distillation, any chromatographic or chemical method like reacting it with Tildgen reagent to get terpenoids alcohols.
Just go through a column chromatography procedure of eluting the eucalyptus oil over 20 times silica with hexane to remove the hydrocarbons and then with hexane containing 0.5% ethyl acetate to get eucalyptol with 100% purity. There will be a chance of co-elution with caryophyllene oxide if you increase the ethylacetate%
