in our research, we need to detect the type of the iron and manganese minerals available in the soil. Since we know different types of minerals show a distinct behavior, this is very essential for scientific work to determine the type of mineral in the soil.
Does anyone have a suggestion how we can simply achieve this goal?
All modern assay labs perform ICP multielement soil assays, which include Fe (as %) and Mn (in PPM). Just find a local lab and give them a call.
Greg Gillstrom Thanks for your answer but I didn't mean the elemental iron. I meant crystalline forms of iron such as goethite, hematite ....
Again, I would contact a local assay lab, most now do mineral species analysis, if they don't they will be able to tell you who can do it for you. Another approach would be to contact a competent geologist for visual identification.
XRD x-ray diffraction will tell you the soil mineralogy of the major mineral phases (those greater than about 10%).
you can use Remote sensing method for detecting iron minerals such as Hematite, Goethite, Limonite.
Reyhaneh's good answer and mine are complementary. Both techniques could be used in parallel. The scale of your study area might push you to using one, or the other, or both together.

XRD analysis are mostly used in order to detect mineral phases. It will give you qualitative and semi-quantitative data which represent mineral assemblages.

Since most minerals in soils are likely to be very fine-grained, I recommend using Rietveld XRD analyses -best to determine quantity of minerals. Also try Qemscan, which could provide textural information.
