Hi Laura, very interesting question I would suggest looking at Nancy Suchman's articles as she uses a measure that seems to capture both dimensions and is sensitive to change. There is also a recent study by Stack, Muzik et al (2014) I think where they used a measure they developed that captures both dimensions, but whether it would be appropriate for your wider age group i dont know.   We have used both Ainsworth sensitivity scales and the DIP (Out et al, 2009) a measure of insensitive that covers various dimensions of insensitive behaviours assessed with Lyons-Ruth's ATYPICAL scales as well as behaviours identified by Main and Hesse as disorganizing. The advantage of the DIP is that you dont need to go for training and pass reliability etc, and the behaviours are clearly described, although thresholds can be an issue so supervision with a clinical eye might come in useful. I think it is good to use two different measures,  each carefully elaborated to explicitly assess sensitivity or insensitivity.   Hope this is of some use and good luck, your work looks really interesting

The three that I've encountered that fit that description are:

-The PARCHISY (Deater-Deckard, Pylas, & Petrill, 1997; more info at the the link below)

-Susan Landry's coding system (Landry, Smith, Swank, & Guttentag, 2008; used with 6 mo-60 mo)

-The 3-bag child-parent interaction scales used in the EHS research and evaluation project (Brady-Smith, Fauth, & Brooks Gunn, 2005)

These may be useful ones to look into further, let me know if you'd like additional info on any of them, I have contact info and samples if you're interested. There's also the PICCOLO for that age range, but that only assesses positive dimensions, so would have to be used in conjunction with something else.

At the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) we used a global rating scale based on the NICHD-SECCYD with the first observation when the infants were 6-8 months old.

Pro: It contains all aspects you are looking for and can be adapted for the second and third year of life.

Con: It demands extensive coder-training to grant reliablity (as it's a rating scale).
