some papers report the density of bacteria in the whole colon. For instance, both O’Hara et al., EMBO reports 2006;7(7):688 and Sender et al., Plos Biol 2016;14(8):e1002533 give 1011 cfu/mL.
Are there papers reporting the density on the surface of the intestinal wall, perhaps in cfu/mm2?
I guess you will not find such articles, because the bacteria are unevenly distributed in the gastrointestinal tract. If the density of microbial colonization in the stomach is small and is only about 1000-10000CFU/ml, and in the ileum — 10(7)-10(8) CFU/ml, then already in the area of the ileocecal valve in the colon, the density gradient of bacteria reaches 10(11)-10(12) CFU/ml. All these date tauch the lumen of the gut. We tried to estimate the density of the bacteria by in mucosa by adding the urea solution to the fixed square of the mouse gut, but the results were not enough reliable. The main reason is the distant position of alive bacteria in a layer of gut mucus, they are not attached to the endothelial cells, but only ancored and then form bioifilms and other bacerial system
Thank you. Would it be possible though to get a rough estimate? perhaps by dividing the concentration of bacteria per mL in the colon by the colon's volume?
