For monitoring tool or work piece we use sensors to measure many parameters(Thrust Force, Torque, Acoustic Emission etc) during machining operation. And I'm also interested to use vibration signals as the tool for monitoring hole quality during drilling operation, Therefore I want to know about different applications of vibration signal ant their analysis.

1. Motor bearings are monitored using sound (vibration) to determine faulty ones. it is useful for preventive maintenance and to prevent costly breakdown(seizure etc).It is interesting to note that experienced workmen are able to judge bearings using screwdrivers as a sort of stethoscope on bearing end shields.
2.Any rotating device (including IC engines ) have a pleasant hum /purring sound when healthy. It is conceivable that a monitoring embedded controller system with machine learning code could be a nice innovation. Using machine learning code would make a single instrument useful for many applications.
3. On a lighter note ..doctors use of stethoscope is quite akin to vibration monitoring..so this innovation could also have medical applications..
4. Regarding signal analysis per se there are many possibilities using DSP tools (FT/ Wavelet Transform ,STFT Filters etc)

If you are coming from Mechanical Engineering background you might be familiar with the vibration testing for machines. One classic example is the dynamic balancing machine for rotors etc.
The theory behind such vibration studies is that the rotating body (rotor for example) must rotate at its primary axis of rotation. If there is an imbalance then this rotor would not rotate about the primary axis but the new rotational axis would inscribe an angle say "theta". Because of this there are vibrations generated in the rotating parts such as the main rotor and later in the bearings. Therefore monitoring vibrations is of vital importance in monitoring the health of rotating machines or parts.
Similar theory can be applied to ball-bearings. If the bearing is in good condition, there will a distinct signal (vibration) called as "signature" that is an indicator of its good health. If faulty then there will be more vibrations and thus many frequency components in the signal spectrum.
if you perform FFT analysis on such setups, then you can monitor the health of such rotating parts.
Coming back to your hole-drilling application monitoring vibration signals can give useful information about the axis of rotation of the drill bit or if there is any imperfection to that, material (of the work-piece) quality such as flaws, life of the drill bit etc.

Monitoring systems heath using vibrations has been already done (for electric machines monitoring). In this context, you may have some information about the vibration signal features (frequency and so on) about the monitored items (in your case hole quality). A first step should be to characterize the the hole quality regarding the vibration signal. Afterwards, you may proceed with the on-line monitoring.
We dealt with monitoring issues using electrical measurements but the monitoring approach is almost the same. In this context, you can have a look on my tutorial posted in researchgate (see the given weblnk).
