If you write a very good text book for use at the university, you have the chance to be awarded, in the sense that very many will buy it, and if you are lucky a publisher can make it available all over the world. I have written five books, and while it doesn't pay the rent, you can get nice feedback from all over the place - that's nice!
My favourite is a basic text on mathematical optimisation (in English, as plenty of my students are masters students from places outside of Sweden), which was first published with a Swedish publisher, and since a few years also has an international publisher (Dover Publications).
The only bummer is that is a hassle with royalties, as it is very costly for them to deal with the accounts - Dover are so old that they like to send checks to my bank, and my bank takes a majority of the royalties for transferring the money. So I have basically given up on it - I do not care to hassle with them, for the rather small reward it entails. I just like to know that my book is used every year, and that I have had no complaints so far.
By doing many experiments and up-down life experiences, a well published book through an experienced teacher/researcher can share their knowledge all over the world. This would be great step for the freshers who are very new in the field.
