I'm not sure what you mean by "real credit to authors isn't based on IF". Let me try to explain my thoughts a bit more.

The individual author doesn't have an IF, because IF is based on all the articles that a journal has published a while ago, let's say including last year. Now if author A publishes in this journal for the first time this year, how could they claim the IF? They have not contributed to the journal's IF at all.

Initially, the Impact factors were used to evaluate journals to index in SCI (by Eugene Garfield). Citation indexes were originally designed for information retrieval, and to find the linkage between citing and cited articles. Later on they are increasingly used for bibliometrics and other studies involving research evaluation.

Impact factors should be used with care. Many people have warned the improper use of IF. Dr Garfield and Prof. Balaram (Editor of Current Science) have warned in many of their essays. It should be used with care across the discipline. Many papers published from developing countries are not even cited well even when they published in high impact factor journals. Since there are discrepancies with h-index, citations are better measures to evaluate individual's performance.

@ Gunasekaran Subbaiah. Thank you sir. Now a days, new researchers are not in aware to select the quality journals which suits for their field and they only focussing on the IF. This article would really help them to know what is IF actually.

Dear Dr. Vijayakumar Rajendran , it is not an easy job to publish papers in a high impact factors and needs to go through a lot of pain to get published in these journals. However, publishing in high impact factor journals like Nature, science, etc will have:

• Get lots of scientific experiences through publishing process
• You will be having more numbers of readers
• It is helpful to get promoted (most of the institutions need publications published in high impact factor journals)
• You will get incentives for your publications (most of the institutions provide incentives for publishing in high impact factor journals)
• You will be famous at global level
• Generally you will get high level of perceived values.

Well . Published in the impact factor journal show that you have a good work. All researcher will interest of yiur work it can be cited many time it can be knowledge and you earn from it some collaboration or relationship

Impact factor (IF) is an average citations to the articles published in a journal a certain period of time (normally 2 years or 5 years) and there is no any direct relation with the quality of research performed . The quality of research depends entirely based on the work/performance of the researchers. An author may choose to publish his/her paper in a journal which may or may not have IF. Citations to the individual article is a meaningful indicator for quality.
