Cross-selectional is preferable for quantitative research. But also depends on your study nature. Actually what you want in your findings and who will be the respondent.
I have 2 groups, diabetic group and non-diabetic one and want to find the number of stem cells(outcome variable) in each group then compare them to see if that cells influenced by gestational diabetes or no
thanks all for your answer...May I give more details about the study:
I will choose a number of diabetic women and the same number of nondiabetic then I will take sample of blood from each participant and process it at laboratory to identify the number of stem cells in each patient after that want to make a comparison between 2 groups regarding the number of that cells
In this cases, the dependent variable is the number of stem cells, which is a numeric variable. Gestational DM (present vs absent), is a categorical variable and will be the primary exposure of the study. Thus, the appropriate study design will be cross-sectional study design and the sample size can be calculated using two population mean formula: http://sphweb.bumc.bu.edu/otlt/mph-modules/bs/bs704_power/bs704_power5.html

I have a doubt .... y can't ths b case control or Cohort?....study looks like a perfect ANALYTICAL STUDY...
As per my knowledge...research can be descriptive, analytical and experimental...of which descriptive and analytical are observational studies and experimental comes unter interventionall studies... descriptive and analytical can be carried out cross sectionaly or longitudinal...
Descriptive studies are done to formulate hypothesis
Analytical to test hypothesis...this is of 2 types
1. Case control... effect to cause...u have effect u go back to check causative factor...also called as a backward looking study(crosssectional)
2. Cohort study...where in u have population who share same characteristic exposed to a risk factor and u follow up to see the effect...(longitudinal study)...@also called as forward looking or prospective study
Experimental study...wherein u prove the hypothesis..
Now coming to ur study..
It is a analytical study...if u chk stem cell number and go back 2 chk gestational diabetes is thr r not thn it is CASE CONTROL study....if u select pregnant women with gestational diabetes and follow them to see the effect thn it's COHORT study
Ths s my knowledge....based on ur study design u can decide...
