SMART breeding (Selection with Markers and Advanced Reproductive Technologies) or Precision breeding refers to a genetic engineering technique of reproducing a species members together to retain desirable traits and so produce a stronger hybrid.
Despite the relatively small impact that Marker assisted selection (MAS) has had on variety development to date, there has been a ‘cautious optimism’ for the future. MAS and related technologies refers to precision plant breeding.
As per my observations MAS has not impacted till now due to the less association of markers, whenever marker association is good it has helped. Many groups add new markers but they willingly or unwillingly avoid previous markers to get work published despite earlier QTL associated markers polymorphic in their population parents.
